This unit will be taught as part of a larger unit about fictional narratives as part of the 6th grade curriculum for writing. I will use state standards to assist me in developing lessons that will aid students in their understanding and development of short stories. I will most likely be teaching in Cabarrus County at Harris Road Middle School. This school is high performing, and is predominantly white. Demographically, it is important to ensure that my lesson plan is not geared only towards white students. For example, when assigning a topic for the short story, I should ensure that it is something that students of all races, religions, and backgrounds can relate to. In saying this, I should not include religious holidays like Christmas, and I should not base the short story around a topic that only students from prosperous backgrounds will be able to relate to. In regards to academic diversity, I must understand that not every student will learn on the same level, and it is my responsibility to reach each of these specific learning levels in my lesson. I will expect my mentor teacher to guide me in the process by helping me find strategies that work in the classroom. Specifically, I will rely on him/her to assist me in ensuring that my unit is presented in a way that is beneficial and accessible to all students.
