I can assume that my students have done some writing in their past, but I cannot assume that they are able to successfully complete a short story at this point in their education.  They have the basis of how to write, but it is my job to help them develop this writing.  Character development is something that students will not know much about.  As this is a vital part of short stories, it is important that students learn how to develop a character and use that character to develop a strong and organized story.  Students will also struggle to organize their stories in a way that is easily understood and logical.  Through the use of transition words, students will learn how to form a story that can be followed with ease.  Finally, students will need help in closing a story.  Often times, students leave a story open ended.  However, we will work on forming a conclusion that sums up the story and leaves the reader with a clear understanding of the action.
